Formulas

Wh/day per load = quantity × average W × hours/day From battery = Wh/day ÷ inverter efficiency (AC loads) = Wh/day ÷ DC port efficiency (12 V loads) Minimum capacity Wh = Σ from-battery Wh × days ÷ usable fraction (DoD) × (1 + margin) Continuous W = Σ quantity × running W of AC loads (all assumed on together) Surge W = continuous W − running W of worst motor + its starting W (one motor starting at a time) Runtime = rated Wh × DoD ÷ from-battery Wh/day × 24 h $/usable Wh = price ÷ (rated Wh × DoD) $/lifetime kWh = price ÷ (rated Wh × DoD × rated cycles ÷ 1000)

A model "fits" when its rated Wh, continuous W and surge W all meet the minimums. Default assumptions are 85% inverter efficiency, 90% DC efficiency, 90% usable capacity and no margin. These are planning values, not measured figures.

Appliance defaults

running_w = upper end of the cited running range; surge_w = upper end of the cited starting range (total watts while starting, not 'additional'); avg_w = an annual-energy figure where one exists (ENERGY STAR), otherwise the midpoint of the cited range. All are defaults: replace them with your own nameplate or plug-meter readings.

Power station models

Specs and prices come from each brand's own US product page on the date shown. If we couldn't confirm a spec on the product page, we leave the model out or mark the spec "not stated". Cycle ratings use different end points (70% vs 80% capacity remaining), so compare lifetime figures with care.
